No salary for striking ASUU lecturers – FG

The Federal Government has directed the vice chancellors of public universities and inter-varsity centres to enforce no-work-no-pay rule on the lecturers who are on strike. The directive was communicated to universities in a memo by the National Universities Commission to univercities’ VCs. The memo, which was signed by the Director, Research, Information and Technology, Dr S. B Ramon-Yusuf, stated that payment of salaries from any other sources would be viewed as violation of extant rules and government’s directive. It partly read, “In view of the current Industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, the Federal Government has directed that there shall be no payment of any form of salaries and allowances to the staff on strike in federal and inter-varsity centers. “Consequently, I am to direct vice-chancellors to apply the “No-work-no-pay” rule. Reversal of UNILORIN ASUU chair, scribe a victory for justice LAUTECH

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Ladoke Akintola, University of Technology (LAUTECH) on Wednesday described the reinstatement of the Chairman and Secretary of the union at the University of Ilorin as a big victory to justice. DAILY POST gathered that appointments of the Chairperson and the Secretary of ASUU, UNILORIN branch, Dr. Kayode Afolayan and Dr. Solomon Oyelekan were illegally terminated by the administration of the immediate past Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Abdulganiyu Ambali on 19th September, 2017. But, after a year legal battle, the National Industrial Court sitting in Akure presided over by Justice Abiola Adewemimo on Tuesday declared the termination of the appointments as illegal and therefore reinstated the two officers. The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has appealed to parents and students to be patient over its decision to reposition and save the country’s university system from total collapse. ASUU National President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Thursday. University lectures had embarked on strike, demanding for the implementation of the 2009 agreement it entered into with the Federal Government. Ogunyemi said that the strike was not to short-change neither the students nor the parents and other key stakeholders but to save the country’s university system from collapse. The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Abia State Chapter on Monday marched through the streets of Umuahia protesting against the ongoing Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) nationwide strike. The protesters, who carried placards with different inscriptions, appealed to the Federal Government to negotiate with the striking teachers in order to urgently end the action. Some of the placards read: “Government don’t commercialise education”, “Save education, save the future”, “Seven per cent budgetary allocation is a misplaced priority,” among others.
